Have We Come Full Circle on Torture?

Fri Apr 25, 2008 at 12:18:51 PM PDT

I think we've reached a point of diminishing returns on how to enforce the law regarding the torture nightmare.

Today I received an email from Congressman Wexler and one from the American Freedom Campaign. It seems everybody knows what the problem is, but nobody has the oomph to do anything about it except ... tell other people to do stuff.

Over the jump to the irony. Careful, it's hot.

This is what the Freedom Campaign sent me.

Please click on the following link to send an email to Chairman Conyers today, demanding that he issue subpoenas to John Ashcroft and John Yoo requiring them to testify before his committee as soon as possible:

One final and important note:  Should Ashcroft and Yoo refuse to comply with duly issued Judiciary Committee subpoenas, the American Freedom Campaign will push for an immediate launch of impeachment hearings.

Enough is enough.

Okay, so we're supposed to email Chairman Conyers, preferably with a video of 100 progressives shaking our fingers at him and a big sign that says Subpoenas! Hearings! Impeachment! or something similar.

I also got an email from Congressman Conyers. It decried the torture memos, meetings, and complicity shown by BushCo and told me to phone, write and fax all my local newspapers and other media outlets to bring this travesty to the attention of the American public.

Do we see a pattern here? Are those who know what's going on saying to pressure the chairman and the chairman saying to increase the number of those who know what's going on?

One wonders what would happen if thousands of progressives did both of these things. I see a circle of activism, full of sound and fury, signifying damn little.
